Journey to Monhegan - ongoing image thread

Post by minniev » Fri Jun 28, 2019 7:41 pm

I've posted several past favorites from Monhegan in the initial invitation for people to join us on our trip to Maine Sept 28-Oct 5. The option is still available if others would like to join Dave Chinn, Duck Unitas, myself, some Significant Others, and a few outliers, but you'll have to wrangle your own lodging (I will be your consultant if you need one since I've been before).

As we get ready for the trip, I thought I'd start an image thread to share other images of things we might see and photograph, just so participants can be getting some ideas of what they want to shoot and how, even what kinds of equipment they may want, etc.

I always welcome feedback so these images are not exempt from that, I just didn't want people to feel obligated, so I put the thread in the Showcase section.

Here's another image of Port Clyde, of an old fisherman who loves to come and just sit, looking at the sea and the light.

Sounds like fun. I'd love to see images of the island.

First View - Tying Up The Ferry

This tiny dock is the center of action on Monhegan. It is almost inaccessible at lower tides, reachable only by long ladders. So fishermen use small boats to get to their fishing boats moored out in the waters of harbor.

Elva's is the place Chinn, Duck and I (and some of our spouses) are staying. It will be photo central for this event. Elva's is the original post office on the island and is now a rental with a small shop downstairs. It has a nice deck that you can see the edge of on the far side, with a view of the lighthouse above. It is at the heart of the island, where the two main roads intersect. The right "fork" leads to the dock, and the road you're looking down winds around the inhabited part of the island, from the school to the church, then turns up Horn hill on either end. Apple trees and flowers line the dirt road. In this image, Tommy the lobsterman has stopped to talk to a woman as the day draws to a close.

Love this image. It's exciting to know that in a short time we'll be witnessing the scene for ourselves. More, more, more, Minnie !!! 8):

The flowers of Monhegan are pretty amazing, even in late September/early October.

Thanks Frank. There’s so many ways to shoot on this island because everything is picturesque.

I’ve seen some pretty spectacular sunsets on the island. I hope we are lucky this year! This sunset was so lurid I had to tone down the colors in post. Actually taken in he same location as the flower picture, a different day and angle.
