In #2 I didn't say anything because, though "optimized" in pp, the scene is real :) (for anyone curious, aperture in #2 is f/6.3. Starburst effect was strictly from my standing where the position of the sun is at edges of the tree trunk, the limb, the leaves.)

As a naturalist I don't think you should do something like open a copper mine and spill the waste or pollute the land for future generations, but I know what you are saying and agree that beyond harming the environment the making of a photograph is your right to do so as you like. S-

Matt Quinn wrote:... The ethical lapses occur not in the photographing, but in the actions surrounding it. Trespassing, destroying or stealing property, invading privacy are unethical in themselves. Doing them as a means to an end ( a successful photo ) doesn't justify them either. (I am of the school that the end doesn't justify the means.) I don't move stuff; I move, if I can without risking life or limb. If I am taking a photo of a grandchild, I will have him or her move toward a window. My wife may comb their hair or straighten clothing. Nothing unethical there. We do it to make the child look better, a bit closer, perhaps, to the ideal child. (Plato again.) No pretense that the child always looks that way. ...

Now, if you want a debate on the Morality of Photography that is a whole other discussion.

Did I hear someone mention a follow-up discussion? LAF

As I reflect more on this discussion, I begin to think that intent is central to the issue of truth v deception. When I am photographing, I want to capture what I felt when I saw the scene. The feeling can't be expressed in words, only in the picture; that's why I take it instead of writing a poem. The emotional reaction is to something visual; a poem could be also be an attempt at that, but more frequently a poem conveys intellectual responses for which words, with their sounds, are more appropriate. ...

We've had this discussion before, and I hope we have it again, but to the point, I like titles and descriptions as they give me insight to the artist mind, but I also like the mystery of now knowing and making up the story for myself, so I'm torn. I learn from knowing but it's exciting to make believe too. S-
