Things are not always as they seem

Post by Graham Smith » Sat Oct 14, 2017 8:47 pm

Four robust healthy looking children?

Not so. This image was taken at a children's hospice in Kolkata. They are all HIV/TB co-infected. Infected through no fault of their own and abandoned by their families to live on the streets.

They receive basic medication from the charity along with food, clothing, shelter and above all they have protection from the dangers of living on the street.

There is a good possibility that I will be returning India in the new year. I wonder how these children will have fared in the two years since I last saw them?

A heartbreaking narrative, Graham, but thank you for telling it nonetheless.
On your return do you think you will actively seek these little ones out, or leave it to chance?

We will definitely be visiting the hospice to deliver donations and what drugs the authorities allow.

This is truly heartbreaking and goes against everything I 'know' as a parent, but is a sad reality of life today.

Off Topic
It's a little off topic but it struck me as odd awhile back that we haven't seemed to have valued human life until very recently in our history. I could be wrong and have been taken in by movies, but it seems even as late as The Old West you could shoot someone, leave a tip with the bartender to clean it up, and probably be on your way. There may be trouble with the law, but there were duels 'at noon' where the authorities would stay out of it until one fell and the other walked away. I couldn't imagine a public dual today and expect to see someone walk away.

I did a cursory Google Search without finding anything that says when we started to care, but I'm sure I don't have the right search parameters.

I pray you keep us with you as you visit these beautiful children again! S-

""I couldn't imagine a public dual today and expect to see someone walk away.""
That depends on which country. I have been to places where life is very cheap, but on a lighter side heading off in a few months for more medical work.
