What To Do With An Apple

Post by minniev »

I confess I am struggling with the pandemic restrictions. This week I am supposed to be in Banff with my beloved grandson. Instead, we are awaiting results of his Covid testing last week. We are mired in a pandemic shutdown and 110 degree heat, cut off from family by quarantine. The birds have left the dam due to the heat. So I have lots of reasons to be distracted and uninspired. I still make attempts to persist.

I made a reflector out of tin foil and a dog biscuit box and took a picture of an apple, then started making different things from the shot. None of them is particularly noteworthy but they are keeping me occupied and forcing me to practice some PS stuff I don't use much. My only rule is that each version has to be totally unlike the others.

This one was the most fun so far. The cold theme is a rebellion against the temperature here. The rabbits are pilfered from a Christmas card, the windows and doors from buildings in Iceland, the background from some online site. Special brushes to do trees, snow, birds, etc.

The bunnies were tame. Here's a wilder one. It's based on a nightmare I had about some cataclysmic event that destroyed everything (sound familiar?), and everyone who survived just had a few belongings they carried in their hands. A guy was making clay pots and decorating them so people could put their meager possessions in something. Mine was shaped like an apple.

So here is a reinterpretation of that...

both are powerful in their own ways. I like the apple house for the contrast against the stark cold and the cute but somehow vulnerable rabbits making it their home - danger lurks right under the surface. And the alley scene could easily be in a fantasy book - though the little girl needs to be cartoonized just a little more and I think her clothes should have a touch of purple to them. These are very strong works in my opinion.

Thanks PIet. And I appreciate the tips on the second one, which is a more complicated thing with lots more problems. I went back and forth on the kid: I wanted her to be more"real" than the other characters but maybe I need to step away from reality a bit more with her. I'll give it a whirl. I had not thought about the colors but I agree.
