Copper it is, the white plume sucks eggs, but we will figure it out. The copper looks more like leather, but perhaps higher contrast and brighter reflections will save it, we will see. Matt, thanks for steering me into the right historical direction.

Frank - HA, if his blood is red, he will stare and stare and she will knock him onto his fat butt!

sometimes, to avoid doing real work, you play... So I am playing with a possible theme/composition. Perhaps a forest of conch shells in the background. Might have to get more spider shots, but due to limited DOF, painting some blurry legs might work just as well..

Can't wait for Piet to tear his hair out on this one, but I don't think it will happen... :)
Dodging and burning;
A safe way to do it is to ( in P/S )
Layer-New fill layer-solid colour
Fill layer with 50% gray
Blend mode-overlay
Now use your burn and dodge tools
This way you can work non destructively
Helmet colour I really do like.
Any male models? leave them bland
I know you are still working, but the spider overwhelms the figure.
Thank you for this post Piet.
Have fun;

thanks Ed, will try that dodging and burning with the 50 percent grey using overlay. About the spider getting too much attention, I think you are right. At first I was thinking it might come out of the dark gloom, but it is pretty powerful that way. I tried lightening it's background using a variety of tricks, but didn't care for the results too much. Before I give up on it, I need to try to darken the entire background to see if the maiden can regain attention due to similar contrasts...

I wanted to play with some background elements to see if the image has potential (was very worried that indeed the spider would be too strong). I cleaned up the background and started adding in conch shells just to see if we can give her a place to stand.

the spider has receded too far into the background, will need to take steps to bring it back forward.

LOL - thank you Frank -- The pale blue skin got rosier and more background added. The spider wants a tasty snack..
