Challenge: Be Free And Be Happy

Post by St3v3M » Fri Nov 10, 2017 5:05 am

Inspired by Creating Images with Free Software -

Bob and I were talking and thought it would be fun to challenge everyone to post an image created with free software.

The only 'rules' are that the photo should not have been seen here before, and should only use free software.

Put your best forward and have fun with it! S-

I thought I'd start this off.

I was going to use some paid-for software I downloaded for free from a daily giveaway site but decided to use Google's Picasa instead.
- I used Picasa as my editing software for a few years but it's amazing now to think how little control it offers. Still cool though!

I pushed this as far as I thought I could without making it look plastic then went a step farther. It's different for me but that's good!

I call it Sunset Dreams and hope you enjoy it! S-

Just to be sure, what is the challenge here ....... to use unpaid-for software? Or to make the image look differently, regardless of sofware used? And then ....... are we to use our own images (as in, before and after), or edit yours?

Excellent questions!

Let's use software that is free to use. It can be something you download or something on the web, etc.

And your images of course. This is about what you can do with yours with limited resources. It's humbling.

Thank you again and Challenge On! S-

The free software is ON1 Photo Effects Free 10.5. I have embraced ON1's software fully and am currently striving to get better at incorporating it into my workflow. I have the full versions of ON1 Photo 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 2017 and now, ON1 Photo RAW 2018 (a potential candidate to replace Lightroom if Adobe ever gets too greedy), but for this challenge, I used the free version. It is notably lacking in Layer and Masking tools, other than to mask out something one has already applied, and then, none too concisely. If I had access to some precise selection tools, I would have toned down the blown-out white flowers.

As far as I'm concerned, though, the Cat's Meow of free software editors, though, is Paint.Net, complete with layers, masks, and can call NIK' Filters (which were free was of the start of this challenge), as well as On1 Effects Free 10.5, which I used here.

Steve, I also used Picasa quite happily for a couple of years. Recently I did a museum matte frame with it. Below is sooc jpg (yep, under-exposed!) and edited via befunky.com, an online editor I use occasionally on my Chromebook.

I have the "deluxe" paid version, so I had to log out of the account to see what was available in just the free version, lol. Quite a bit, it turns out! The primary change is with a free pre-set effect called vintage color. Free features for basic editing include exposure, sharpening, crop, re-size, straighten/rotate, vignette and more.

I haven't tried BeFunky yet but I like what I see. And I love that you were so honest! S-
