Easy to use security cam question

Postby Duck » Wed Dec 06, 2017 8:41 pm

My studio is on the third floor, back corner area of a large multi-building ancient factory-turned-commercial space complex. I'm entering my third year here and have yet to encounter any issues with unwanted trespassers. Last week I caught two teenage girls wandering the building after hours and I have a suspicion they went into the space next door to me (his fault for leaving the door open and the place easily accessible, but that's another issue). This got me to thinking about installing one of those wi-fi enabled surveillance camera systems that alert me via cell phone and live streams when it detects movement.

Does anyone use (or personally know someone who has) such a system? If yes, what system do you have? I am interested in knowing if they connect directly to the wireless router or if it requires some kind of computer, dongle or other gizmo to be on and connected to the system. How have you found the quality and reliability of your system? What features do you like/hate and what features do you wish it had?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Though I don't have such a system, my son does, and I'll be glad to ask for details.

Thank you. There are so many choices it's hard to wade through all the hype.

My son uses the Canary wireless system indoor and outdoors, and subscribes to their service. He can monitor what's going on at the house on his phone from anywhere. It's video and audio, detects movement, and he can interact with whoever's there. He can talk to the workmen, to me, or the dog. He's done a complete renovation this year and this lets him monitor exactly what is going on over there, when workmen come/go and what they do, as well as intruder prevention. He's been very satisfied with it. He said if there is any drawback, it's the slight delay (1-5 seconds) in pushing the video feed to his phone.

Thanks for the info, Minnie. I've never heard of Canary. The time lag is understandable. I'm not sure if I want a subscription service but I'll take a look at it.

Another note: he said after he got it, he held off the subscription service and after a couple of months they offered him the subscription at 50% off, which he decided was worth it. His advice was, wait for the deal, it will come.

Good advice. I went to their web site and read up on the system. It's not a monitoring service as I first thought when you mentioned subscription. This system is exactly what I was looking for with all the features that I feel I would need. Tell your son, "thank you" for me. I'll do a little more searching but this really looks great.

If you have any specific questions, I can put you in touch with him. He did a lot of research before he chose this one, so it was a calculated decision. Sounds like ya'll were looking for similar solutions.

SimpliSafe is supposed to be a one of a kind system too.

And, this might be helpful What’s the Best and Most Affordable Home Security System in 2018?

I hope these help! S-
