Spiderwort
Sunrise yesterday. I'm always trying to figure out how to take photos of the sun without blowing them out, and dawn with clouds is when I'm most successful.

I'm impressed and without taking away from the beauty I wonder what you think about using a reflector or soft flash to fill out the flowers? Playing back to your original image though I wonder again if it's better to leave them as is to convey the mood of the moment. Conundrums, conundrums... What do you think? S-

You will be hard pressed to shoot a full sun. Remember that you need a minimum of 16 stop filter to shoot it, and not have it blown out. very few things in nature that are seen only by reflected light can compete...in fact none that I am aware of. Go with the pros....meter to the side for proper exposure of the rest of the picture, then compose to fit the sun in. Their is no data to be had in the suns disc without solar filters.
...and I like the mood and composition you have in this shot.
After coming back to this I think I would have lowered my viewpoint a tad. That would accomplish two things: First it would narrow the amount of water between the sun and the flower, AND secondly it would have put the reflected sunlight stream so that it passed all the way through the flower. But that is not a critique...the kudos stand. You could, and should print this and hang it.
There are no banal subjects in photography, but an infinite number of banal ways to illustrate them.

Thanks for your detailed comments! I know the sun is a struggle (impossible unless I'm aided by haze or fog at sunrise), and I settle for lack of detail by degree, trying to pick my poison based on circumstances. That's good advice about shooting from lower. I shot various viewpoints but I don't think I got much lower than this one. It would have been cool to get the beam shooting all the way through! Appreciate!

I love the reflection's leading line to the flower.

All the great photographers use cameras! No, really.
