Wonderful! I'm a half-baked steam nut (meaning I don't chase them around the country as some do). 41241 in the lead is a 2-6-2 "Prairie" type (at least that's what that wheel arrangement is called in the U.S). I think you may call them 5100 class. This one is a tank engine, water tanks on the sides of the boiler rather than pulled in a tender, coal in the bin behind the footplate. We call them Prairies too Chuck, the names for the different wheel configurations is pretty universal. This is specifically a "pannier tank"

The other engine is a Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Class 25 ‘Ironclad’ 0-6-0 No.957 built in 1887. It is a tender loco.

I love the gritty feel of #1 and all the details. Your monochrome processing is always enviable.

#2 is just plain cool! We're drawn to that pop of red, and then suddenly discover the engineer in the window! Love that, along with the way the steam billows around inside the confines of the structure.

Don't know a thing about trains, but like them. I'm old enough to fondly remember the time before diesel engines replaced steam in America. Both shots are wonderful, but the first is by far my favorite. It has a true old-timey quality.

Everything I know about locomotive engines I learned from Thomas the Tank Engine... :lol:

I agree that #1 is an awesome shot. I, too, love the B&W processing on it. The interaction of the engineer with the man on the platform and the two gents in their own world definitely adds to the story.

I do love the second image only because of the silhouette of the engineer in the window but I find the billow of steam to the right too bright and distracting. It competes for my eye. (sorry for the critique)
