A large number of these birds winter here. While many migrate further north to nest some do remain and nest with the egrets and herons in the rookery in town. They only produce the crest feathers for which they are named during breeding season. The lighter colored birds are yearlings.

Martha In the Appalachian foothills of Northeast Alabama
Wonderful images. I love cormorants. We never had many up until Hurricane Katrina. Now they are common all over the lower half of the state. Some folks in the MS delta call them Katrina Birds. The seem to like the cypress swamps.
