Silent Running

Post by minniev » Tue Aug 06, 2019 2:38 pm

Boat+Berg in the Strait of Belle Isle.

It's a struggle for me to shoot from lurching boats but I try anyway. This is from the ferry on a rough and gloomy crossing between Newfoundland and Labrador.

I have shots from every position, before the boat reached the berg, as it crossed in front of it, and after it moved on, so feel free to tell me how I should have shot it different, because I probably have a version to match.

I like this one a lot - except perhaps the bird - might want to crop so it isn't dead center (but I DO like it like you have it)

Thanks Piet. I may get rid of the birds. They are too tiny and far away to show any detail. I sometimes choose dead-center for no particular reason. Maybe to be contrary?

ha! yeah, contrary is good. And easiest way to focus fast, particularly on a moving boat. If you choose to crop in one direction or another, you can throw some darkness/lightness on it using a gradient as a mask. Edit... and being a lover of the kitchen sink, I did not think you would like too much symmetry - LOL

I’m happy for you to post whatever you can get from it. It may not be a good enough file to work with though. Yeah, it was a dull day, very darkly overcast, with the berg and the boat like a mirage coming out of the light misty rain.

I wonder how this would look in color, but from what you mention about the day probably not very different.
