How to make a Tiffany Lamp

Post by Matt Quinn » Sun Jun 24, 2018 7:09 pm

Start with a chandelier.

The story: my wife and I love Waterford crystal. When we were at a shopping mall in Virginia, we noticed an outlet for Waterford that was closing and was discounting stuff dramatically. Christmas presents for friends and family! Beer mugs, whisky tumblers, water glasses, paperweights, clocks. We cleaned up for a relative pittance. I wandered the store and noticed a crystal chandelier that we neither needed nor wanted but the sales person said some creative folks were having them made into a Tiffany lamp. We suddenly needed a Tiffany lamp. And the price was ridiculously low. I can never resist a bargain. Had it made for the bride's desk.

When my wife and I vacationed in Ireland a few years back our tour bus stopped at the Belleek Pottery Factory and Chinaware store in Belleek, Northern Ireland. They had a collection of Waterford Crystal ware on display there in their gift shop. Later we stopped at a Waterford Crystal factory that had a variety of fabulous one-of-a-kind pieces on display, from trophies to figurines and more. We even got a chance to see one of their craftsmen cut a design into a crystal bowl by hand. Pretty impressive. Here's a snapshot from the trip.

Duck, My wife and I visited the same factory and bought two table lamps, had them shipped here. Arrived in lots of straw and intact. My mother had been born in Northern Ireland, so we were there to visit the "home place." Didn't have a camera in those days, unfortunately. Matt

No kidding... my grandmother was from County Cork. Came over when she was a little girl. My visit was also a 'pilgrimage' of sorts. How cool.

These are beautiful in monochrome Matt, you did the delicacy of that glass justice. Elegant presentation, I’d love to see them in print.

Thanks, Minnie. This is a family treasure but neither of the sons or spouses wants it. Take it with us? Matt
