'Johnny Bench'

Post by davechinn » Fri Apr 05, 2019 10:57 am

As a kid, my favorite sport was baseball. The neighbor kids and I would pretend to be certain ballplayers when playing backyard ball and my favorite was Frank Robinson. Today as an adult, I have only a select few considered as favorites and Johnny Bench is at the top of my list.

The Findlay Market 2019 opening day parade grand marshal was MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, which I had no interest in photographing. However, Johnny Bench just happen to be riding in the same car next to the commissioner, so here is a couple I was able to capture of Johnny Bench. Both have been processed differently and I'm just curious if there is a preference?

I prefer the first...both well done but the first has a live feel to it which seems to add some impact for me.

These are great. I have baseball knitted inside of me from watching it at all levels for 30 years, so of course this appeals to me. I prefer the second because I can see the baseball story in his eyes - the memories and also the sadness that never completely leaves after they can't do it any more.

Thanks for your input Frank. Seems it's probably subjective between the two and that's understandable.

Thanks Minnie !!! I understand your thoughts concerning baseball, given the history you have shared. I agree, the eyes tell/shows the memories of days gone past. I'm sure he missed playing the catchers position when possibly forced to play 1st and or 3rd base because of back, knee and age issues. IMO, he was an excellent role model for the kids during his time and actually still is today for most of us.

I like both alot Dave. I'm a baseball fan myself, just wish the Mariners would do better. Right now they are on a roll.
