the Shaman & the Fortuneteller - VooDoo Love

Post by minniev » Tue Sep 25, 2018 12:52 pm

This couple works the Jackson Square area, she as a fortuneteller and he as a VooDoo Shaman. I shot this as she told him goodbye for the evening.All suggestions and comments appreciated, especially ways to make them stand out a bit more (what I already did involved a slight blur of what's behind them, some dodging/burning and slight vignette. I don't like going too far with such things since they look kooky to me when overdone.

Admire how you moved to get them framed, open sky for the kiss, leading lines for the rest. A real pro. Matt

Consider de-saturation as a separation tool and also use of light from adjustment layers and masks.....

More like luck Matt, it was a sweet moment and one of my favorite shots from the trip.

so before you tell me show you....here's what I ended up with. Before I made the suggestion I had only three or four layers that just highlighted them a touch to make sure I was giving you advice pertinent to your question of separation......then I got to thinking about overdone and kooky and went crazy....may not be for everyone but I had fun....thanks for letting me play on one fabulous image minniev

Minnie;
My last comment on your work was with the young boy shaking hands with the chrome plated man in the street.. :)
As before you have told the story in one go.
Of the two pictures presented here, I prefer yours. Aggressive use of filters is not required in this instance.
Tell it as it is!
Kind regards;

Wow! I love it. Yes, it’s overdone and kooky but it’s also wonderful. Makes New Orleans look like ancient Italy, and the characters pop. Love the texture work too. A totally different image but a captivating one. Thank you for playing with it and for sharing.

Glad you liked it. I am loving Frank’s version too. It takes the image into a different realm, but that’s OK with me, one of my greatest joys with digital is all the different ways we can go with the same image.

A perfect example is the excellent image Dave Chinn created with “Tugboat Captain” who is really a street guy, possible homeless, in the French Quarter. How he even conceived such a thing is an amazement to me. The original view of the real person is as far from the end product as it could possibly be. I guarantee that if that guy saw Dave’s image, he would have no idea it was a photo of him.
