Comet Lovejoy. The Xmas Comet...

Postby Onslow » Fri Dec 19, 2014 11:18 pm

In December 2011 the southern hemisphere was treated to a Great Comet. Comet Lovejoy had been spotted a few months earlier and the predictions were it would put on a good show for the southern hemisphere people and as it went north, it wourld fade. The only thing was that I don't think anyone expected such a show. The comet was visible to the naked eye extending at least 60 degrees in length. It was really quite an amazing sight. Both images were unguided. 9 Secs at f1.4 ISO 1600. Canon 5Dmk2 with a Canon EF 50mm 1.4 USM. These were taken on the 23rd of December.

1) Comet Lovejoy with the rising moon near sunrise.

2) Comet Lovejoy with IIRC the International Space Station passing to the right of it in the middle.

Quite amazing! When I was a kid, Haley's Comet always held a certain mystique for me. I calculated how old I would be, which at my age at the time seemed ancient, and wondered if I would live that long. I did. It came and left and, sorry to say, I never even sought it out. It was barely visible where I lived at the time. A couple of year later I did drive out into the country to see another comet more visible to the naked eye, but it was tiny in the distance - not easy to spot. Yours was so spectacular (how how I hoped Haley's would be). Thanks for sharing.
