"PT Visits"

Post by Ernst-Ulrich Schafer »

PT, short for Port Townsend, WA, we also refer to Port Angeles as PA. ;-) Port Townsend is 45 mins from our house, a wonderful Victorian Seaport. Whenever I have the chance I always enjoy
a long morning visit. Might end up moving there in a few years.

Best to ya, Ernst

That second image (the "Ernst Image") is pure genius. I'm always trying to get a good shot of small boats like that, when I run into them but have nothing that approaches this quality. Your boat image is truly exceptional, an Ernst master shot. Perfect separation of tones, rendering of lines.

The first one is interesting and the composition is quite appealing, but the reflection (I think it's reflection, not sure) is a bit dizzying.

I've been to Port Townsend a couple of times and it seems like it would be a fine place to live. The last time I was there it seemed to have retained its authentic Victorian charm without giving way to excessive focus on tourist entertainment.

I love that second one also. It gives me a powerful sense of symmetry, yet it is not symmetrical. The light is exquisite (thereisnolightlikebacklight). The boat shines white in slack black water. There is a barely visible reflection of her hull. The boat is nearly perpendicular to the pier but not quite, nor is the pier perfectly square to the frame. This creates tension, and I freely admit that had I made the picture (oh how I wish) I probably would have squared and plumbed everything up and roont it (no roont is not a real word). The mooring line is made fast to the boat with a perfect bowline and to the cleat with a perfect cleat hitch, then flemished down but somewhat carelessly, creating a little more tension in an otherwise utterly peaceful, perfect scene.

Ernst, I don't have any money but if I did I'd buy that.

There is no light like back light. No, really. :)

I, too, love the second one. I totally agree with Charles. A superb composition, wonderful light, perfectly processed.

The first one made me check that I had the right glasses...
The second made me catch my breath!
Incredible tonal , contrastual (I think I just coined that neologism...seems a useful one...) and geometric balance!

I have just the place to hang it.

I can't critique these photos. They are out of my league. I do like them both for different reasons; but I'm most enchanted with the second shot for all the reasons that Minniev mentioned.

These are in Member's Showcase so there's no critiquing but for most of us how we feel about an image, and why, is good enough! S-

Thanks for all the comments guys. I love exploring that town and need to go and visit soon as it's been awhile now. Busy with life, studio, etc. Here are a couple from the

I would call the first 'Black and white', but it has its place and I like it! S-
