Car Fire at Walmart

Postby Duck » Sun Sep 17, 2017 1:59 am

Coming home from a long day I stopped by the supermarket. On my way out two police cruisers and a fire truck came rushing past me. I immediately pulled in behind them and followed them 1/4 mile up the street to the local Walmart. Curious as to what had brought them there, lights flashing, I immediately encountered a car in the middle of the lot fully ablaze. I quickly parked, grabbed my camera and took a few shots. The fire was extinguished within a couple minutes. I was amazed at how quickly these young men operated to quench the flames. Unfortunately not before the fire did extensive damage to two other adjoining vehicles.

Oh my !!! That first one really is ablaze. Timing as you know is everything, being in the right place at the right time, for you, but not so much for the car owners parked next the car on fire. Very dramatic scene and well done, Duck.

Geez, that looks like Carmageddon! Good job in deciding so quickly how to shoot that, I know I would have ended up with boring shots that screamed "amateur". These are fantastic documentary shots that really isolate exactly what needs isolating in the frame. Did you share this set with the fire unit involved? I know they'd love them.

This is great photojournalism. Freelancers sell stuff like this to the local paper... wait. Well, they used to. :(

Great job! Very dramatic. Quite an inferno, I can almost feel the heat. Makes me think twice about where I should be parking. Perhaps way in the back, far from other vehicles, would be safer - walk would be good for me, too.

Thanks, everyone, for looking and commenting. It was definitely a moment of pure luck that allowed me to get these shots. Had I been in a clearer mind I would have shot video of it instead. As it was, I did get a little video but not until the fire was out.:-(

Sadly that is a thing of the past. Nowadays they don't pay anything but they do a very good campaign of eliciting viewer support by constantly asking people to submit news story ideas and photos and videos of newsworthy stuff. They even make it easy by having a dedicated section on their website for uploading content.

A small car fire in a Walmart parking lot, while interesting, is not spectacular news so I know I couldn't sell it. I did upload it though and it did get a mention on air so that was cool. I'll post a link if they end up posting it to their web site.
