'Grandpa Elliott'

Postby davechinn » Mon Jul 10, 2017 2:41 pm

While in New Orleans 2016, I came across Grandpa Elliott on the streets. He was on the corner of which streets I don't remember. I stopped and had a brief conversation in which he stressed for me to look up 'Stand by Me'. I have done so and discovered quite a bit about Grandpa Elliott. Wonderful image, Dave, of this gentlemen who I've watched, talked to, and photographed for several years, usually in this same spot on Royal St. He is almost royalty among the street entertainers of New Orleans. These people are not beggars. They are entertainers who play for change.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandpa_Elliott Your signature style, but not too heavily applied for the subject. I like that you have left plenty of context evidence about where the image is shot, too.- the balcony, the advertisement for the ghost tour, the French Quarter signs. I miss his standard blue and red outfit but it looks so good in your nicely converted monochrome, I can't complain about color!

Thank you Minnie !!! I kinda thought this was on Royal Street but wasn't quite sure. I have read his bio and watched numerous YouTube videos on him. He has a remarkable voice and I could watch him for hours on end. I only took two shots of him and wished I had taken more and some with a wider view such as, what you describe as the kitchen sink, but I didn't. I debated on a color version and since you made a comment about color I decided to go ahead and post the other image I have of him in color. I agree, his traditional red shirt and blue overalls seems to be his signature symbol. I'm also amazed at the various characters we encounter while on the street. It pleases me to cross paths with someone of this nature.

Your welcome to post any of your images of him or any street shots for that matter here if you like. I appreciate your comments. Your knowledge of the area is a plus for me.

Oh Man do I love that Stand By Me version. Would love to meet him myself and take a portrait of him.

A photo of a photo being taken.

Here's Grandpa Elliot, Dave, and the French Quarter in the standard MinnieV kitchen-sink style.

Thank you Ernst !!! Glad you love Stand by Me. He does it so well. We are planning a New Orleans trip for September 2018 and would enjoy your company to join us. Minnie is interested for another meet up, while there is another person (Don) who lives in the area will most likely join in as well. I think it would be outstanding that several of us could get together for photography, conversation and just overall a good time. So hopefully others will see this and chime in !!!

Minnie, you have been holding out !!! I had no idea you took this shot. The short time I was conversing with Grandpa Elliott, I thought you were down the street with Sharon waiting on me. The kitchen sink works very well here. I absolutely love it. I remember seeing the lady in blue down at Jackson Square. I got a couple of shots of her but nowhere near as good as this. Thanks for posting this.

Isn't it amazing where life takes us and the people you meet if you just open your eyes to new experiences? Long Live Grandpa Elliott! S-

Absolutely !!! You never know who your going to meet on the streets. I have another interesting character that I posted when I first joined pM, but has since been lost with the server change. I'll repost later. Thanks for commenting Steve.
