Salt Marsh With Ceapabhal

Post by Graham Smith » Wed Sep 20, 2017 11:04 am

Salt marshes on Harris.
I'm chancing my arm with this one but as Minnie asked me, when I took the picture, what I had in mind I thought I had better show it :)

It's quite wonderful and a classic Graham style of landscape. The somewhat extreme processing suits the rather fantastical design of these peculiar things. (Of course there are lots of unusual landforms on those islands, many of which I'd never seen anything like and had no frame of reference for shooting or imagining results). I confess to trying these in both color and black and white, but haven't come across my magic yet. Meanwhile, I shall enjoy your magic! I am glad you gave me a name for them.

I knew you were up to something when I watched you picking your way across these things, which I thought you'd surely sink through. Of course when you didn't, I had to come try them myself.

Fascinating and a bit otherworldly. I'm uneasy but drawn to the scene - sort of like a haunted house :)

Hi, Graham,
I do like this one! I was immediately struck by a sense of a "call -and-response" relationship between the dark high-tide islands and the dark undersides of the clouds. A bit of a haunting melody in duet is heard.

Wonderful image Graham. The heavy blacks suits this image well.

Thank you Ernst, I had in my mind that I wanted the islands to appear to be floating above the water but the weather conditions didn't allow us to spend enough time there to really "work the scene". Also Minnie was a little concerned that I might disappear from sight through one of the islands ;)

Graham, Would it be too much, too forward to ask what this looked like out of the camera before you started your work on it? I am trying to improve my b&w photos and aspire to approach this kind of result. Don't hesitate to decline, though, if you want. Thanks. Matt

I'm only too pleased to share the untouched file with you Matt. I have converted to .jpeg and reduced the file size. If you want a .tif or some other file type just let me know.

Thank you Graham. I am away from home until next Tuesday and will get to my computer then. Eager to see the before since I have seen the after. Best. Matt
