I like the spot being just a little soft at the edges so it emphasizes the sharp edges of the vegetables. I'm more attracted to the pepper against the green spot than the eggplant, perhaps because the pepper has more shape and definition. I wonder if a cauliflower might be better for shape. This is an interesting out-of-the-box concept. For me, though, something indefinable seems lacking, like a pinch of spice or a little salt or something. If I had made them I think I might try cropping them square. I suspect there is too much negative black space out to the sides, unless there was something else there, a faint texture, ghosting in of a pattern, something other than unrelieved matte black. Either that or maybe somehow allow some wrap from the spot (somehow) to put a highlight on the edges, kind of like white line glass, just a little definition. Otherwise it strikes me as matte black on matte black regardless of the color of the spot.

My thought exactly. That's why I'm so on the fence.

A good idea. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks.

This is an interesting concept but I agree that it may benefit from some further development. The shapes don't seem to have as much impact as perhaps they should, given how simple and stark the compositions are and how sharp the shapes are.

Bigger circles of color?
Irregular shapes to the colored areas?
Less black space around the edges/different crops?
Texture added to the colored space?
Shadow larger in the frame?

It's something I haven't seen before, so the originality attracts. Worth more exploration, I believe.

You've all given me some great ideas to try. Edge lighting, textured spot, or event a small amount of lighting on the veggies but keeping the edges dark may work too. Time for some experimentation...

Textured spot (rather than just a circle) and edge lighting on the eggplant. Better but still lacks that emotional touch.

I was thinking the same, a little front lighting, or just a touch of side lighting, would really set this off. Great catch! S-
