thank you Frank and Min - those acorns went bust - I might need an acorn drawing class. In general I think she is way too harsh, I have to see and lay down more gradual gradations in tone.

So... I think the problem that I am having with splotchiness is that I have been using only two tones at a very low opacity. A white tone to make things brighter, and a black tone to make things darker. But as I work, things get too dark and too light. So I am thinking (not knowing), that perhaps if I had more than two tones that I am working with, perhaps I can make things be smoother. So I have created on the left a graduation of tones that I can lift from. Now I will have 15 or 20 tones to pull from (and I can set their brush opacity to a higher number)…

We will see if this helps - I will still have the problem of know what specific tone a given area should be... THAT is a SEEING problem..

so I know nothing of what you're trying to do but a 50% grey layer set to soft light painting white or black to mellow the splotchiness to tedious?? many tones sounds more complicated.....

thank you Frank - I tried some of what I said, and it helped some. I tried some of what You said - That helped too. And then I also tried using Silver Effex Pro (over-exposure), and that helped too! Here is where it is at now:

I felt that for some reason the splotchiness was reduceds and that the image felt better. I really liked it like that - but you absolutely made me wonder.. So being curious I used the standard curve trick and threw some contrast back into it to make the darks darker. And the resulting image doesn't go splotchy on me - I think this looks pretty good too, and is more in line with Frazetta's painting.

Now the only thing missing is good art work!

good to here about the splotchiness......I think the increased contrast really made it better

yeah, I think that was my best cut so far...

Now I am starting to add color, and Suddenly I can see so many problems that I want to scream. Perhaps I can now see/and fix my value issues and then wipe the color back out...
