Bathing Ghat on the Ganges

Post by Graham Smith » Mon Mar 05, 2018 10:24 pm

The Ganges, also known as the Ganga or Hooghly as it passes through Kolkata. A Ghat is a place with steps to access the river. The bathers are not only cleansing their bodies they are cleansing their spirits at the same time. This is in a river that is highly polluted. The levels of fecal coliform bacteria from human waste in the river near Varanasi are more than 100 times the Indian government's official limit.

old buildings overgrown
billboards and large hoards of birds
mankind somehow thrives

the old and the new
are there places we can go?
welcome here, not there

This is a great image Graham, and I don't think I've ever seen one of this event from such a wide angle view. With my penchant for kitchen sink compositions full of context, this one is wonderfully satisfying to me. The slightly muted color palette works very well.

And thanks Piet for the poignant verse. I am amazed by Piet's photo critiques done this way.

This reminds me of so many places with the old against the new, the rich and the poor. Beautiful, just beautiful! S-
