Back in the day, the signal was operated by weights, kinda like grandfather clocks and such and had to be reset regularly. It was isolated until a road was built. Then it became a bit of a tourist attraction and they had to also act as tour guides. Keep in mind, when it was first built, the light source was from kerosene too.
