The Big Gulpers are Back

Post by LindaShorey » Sun Dec 03, 2017 8:30 pm

A few of this fall's first wave of cedar waxwings in the tree outside my balcony.

My fourth year of shooting - what a difference going from Canon SX50 bridge camera to Canon T3i with 70-300 mm EF lens to current: Olympus EM10 with M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm f/4.8-6.7 II Lens. Fast focusing, fast-writing card. Hopefully I will have more chances to tweak settings. They move a lot faster than eagles :D

Thanks for looking!

Wonderful images. You have to love the light on that first image. I can't believe how these little critters can swallow that large berry whole like that. Amazing.

I know, it makes me gag just to watch :D I do often see them kind of push it back out and toss it again, like you might see with a great blue heron and too-large fish. Thanks Duck!

Gosh, they are gorgeous! The pictures, and the birds! (OK)
Friends call me Chuck. :photo: This link takes you to my Flickr albums. Please click on any album to scroll through it.
(I prefer to present pictures in albums because I can put them in specific order.)

All the great photographers use cameras! No, really. :|

Great work, the only thing I might consider is in selective color open up the blacks 3-5 points then create a high pass filter layer at 10-15 set it to soft light layer mode, reduce opacity to 25% then check the levels on the high pass layer and make sure the ends are tight on the histogram for the layer. This will really bring the detail out in the blacks without over sharpening the image.

Awesome birdies, sharp as can be in a great position for you! Glad you are having fun with your semi-new gear, I figured you would.

Chuck and Minnie, thanks for checking 'em out. Chuck, I told myself I wasn't going to bother this year, yet within minutes I had 200 photos :)

Bobby - I'm so grateful for your time and suggestions! I use PS Elements, not the full PS, and am not as proficient as I should be. In fact I'm a bit stalled at the moment, but your interest has encouraged me to move forward.

gulp is the perfect word! The stem like a tongue, do they crush the berry then spit it out?

Yeah, that's an issue we're going to be resolving with the next upgrade
