Selfie on the beach with a seagull's feather

Post by Matt Quinn » Tue Jul 31, 2018 1:26 am

It wasn't till I saw this on the computer screen that I realized I should have rotated the feather 90 degrees to the right. If we go back tomorrow, I'll try again, but I suspect the moment will have passed.

I am huddled in sun protecting hat and jacket. Those in shorts and shirtsleeves wondered.

Personally, I love it. It has a strong silhouette with a very distinct outline. The brightness of the feather stands out boldly against the gray sand making the realization of the placement a fun play on the theme. The viewer doesn't have to work too hard to see the ideation yet there is enough of a lead in that one spotted it becomes a happy surprise find. Personally, I think it's the hat that really makes this such a strong image.

If you try to recreate this, consider giving yourself some extra room on the sides to experiment with. Maybe even play with a landscape aspect. Not that I think it will look better (I have my doubts it will) but just as an exercise on exploration.

Well done, top to bottom.

Yeah, I can see this as a horizontal crop. Keep the width of the original, crop from the top, process the same way and call it a day. Seeing more of the sand on the sides (for me) it adds to the image.

Thanks for sharing that.

Tell them you are a spy.

I like the feather as it is, but would probably like it the other way too. As it is, it's aligned with the watermarks in the sand.

A little fun is good for our art!

Here you go. Processed a little differently to bring out the detail in the sand. Matt

Yeah! I like this one a lot better. There is breathing room around the silhouette and the texture of the sand really is striking in this one.

I agree with Minnie... it does have that sinister "spy" look to it. ;)
