Help me narrow juried show candidates

Postby Duck » Wed Mar 09, 2016 8:26 am

I am considering entering some images into a juried show this month. I have never entered any form of photo contest but I thought I'd take the plunge. They have a 3 image minimum with no more than 10 images total. I have 12 images up for consideration and need to cull it down to 3 or 4. Honest input on which you feel are the stronger images would be a big help. Thanks in advance.

Duck, I suspect that Ed or Ernst would probably be the best choices for advice in this area. I may be wrong, but I think they have the most experience with such stuff.

That being said, the ones that grab my eye the most are:
#2, #5, and #12

I like the others, but they just don't hold my eye like these ones do.

Duck, my favourites from these are #8, the Lighthouse, as I think this is the simplest of all the images and the one that grabbed my attention first. The second one is #12, the guitar player. IMHO, it is the best of the people images. After that, #3 and #5 are sort of tied for third place. I hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Hopefully others will chime in. Entry is in a few days. Talk about last minute but I just found out about it.

Is there a theme ? I assume from the randomness of the images you have listed there is not.

I like #6 . Nice detail. Pretty and soft lighting with the lines of the bridge leading your eyes into the photo.

Also #9 because of the textures and colors. Nice composition also

And, #12 Shows a good example of a B&W without being over contrasted as soo many tend to do. Would have been perfect if he would have had his head up just a touch but, it is what it is.

I also like the lighthouse but a little different. If it were me, I would lose the light vignette on it and turn it into a B&W. Only with this one, boost up the contrast with it being a landscape.

These are just my picks being a non-professional . But a lover of photography and great images

No, I really didn't think of establishing a theme. I just pulled these more or less at random. The last few I'm not too crazy about as I was experiment more than anything.
I'm not even sure I can get these in as entries are due by this weekend and I have a full schedule. I have to get them printed, matted and delivered no later than Sunday. Judging is on Monday. As I mentioned, I just learned about this and it was a spur of the moment decision on my part. If nothing else, I can get these ready for another competition. I'm sure there will be others. I just never considered entering before. All my work has been either for my own personal enjoyment, for workshops or for clients, not really for public consumption as "art photography". Trying to branch out and expand myself.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I appreciate it. I' going to enter he minimum of three images. I think the lighthouse, the harp bridge and the musician will be my final choice.

Beautiful images...my first instinct is that #6 and #12 jump off the page for sure! Good luck!
