It saddens me to forward the news that our good friend and fellow photographer, Matt Quinn, has passed.
As some of you may know, he had been battling cancer for a while and was on his way to recovery.
Please take a moment to remember him in your prayers.

Arm may be easier to clone than skate!

Week #3 - White

Of course people who live other places choose White as a January theme because there is SNOW, beautiful snow, to photograph. In Mississippi, we are snow-less, and the only colors are gray and brown in January. So I decided to go under the dam and photograph the mountains of white foam that are a result of them releasing excess floodwater. That stuff also means my birds have no way to see their quarry so they have gone elsewhere. It turned out to be harder than I expected. I had to take and blend 3 photos to get anything resembling focus across the plane of the river, which is now twice as wide as usual if not more. I liked this nice tree and the circling gulls in the sun, but I had to clone out 3 utility poles, 6 warning signs, a dizzying collection of wires and a submerged restroom. Once I got past that I took it into silver efex for processing in a semi-high key manner. The result wasn't worth the work but it is all about the practice I think.

I with Frank - that tree is amazing. If you go back this winter, get the whole of it. Is very cool with the gulls swarming under.

It is a nice tree. But here's the catch. When the river is not flooded, the tree is nestled between the concrete bathrooms and the kiosk that has the info about the spillway, and surrounded by trucks with boats attached. And the gulls will be gone elsewhere with no water to attract them. So it's a mixed bag of tricks, like much of photography. I've tried and failed to get it with any separation from its surroundings, but will of course keep at it!
